KOLA was found as a stray by one of our foster families in Texas. He had no micro-chip and no one responded to the found dog posters that were distributed where he was found, nor the lost/found sites.
KOLA is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm and tick disease tested and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 22 November 2015 and in December 2016 weighed around 45 pounds.
KOLA has a condition called Keratoconjunctivitus Sicca, which means he has a malfunctioning tear duct. The right eye tear duct works at less than 50%, so requires multiple drops daily. Although he is responding VERY well to the drops, the veterinary eye specialist predicts this as most likely being a lifelong issue for Kola.
A normal eye produces 23ml of tear per 60 seconds, KOLA's right eye produces 10ml, his left eye is normal. KOLA has no ulceration and no chance of eye amputation as long as he continues to respond well to the Tacrolimus drops, which he will need the rest of his life. She said the eye could roller coaster, improve and get worse then improve, etc. his entire life. If it worsens, drops would be adjusted and so forth if it improves as well. His eye looks great. It's very clear with no mucous and barely squinting, only when he wakes up and it's a little dry. Foster mum has him trained well with treats to receive the drops. He's a good boy and very well worth it.
KOLA has a FABULOUS personality! He gets along well with other dogs, all sizes, and is beginning to adjust to his foster brother cats. If they don’t run, he sniffs and is curious, if they run he chases after them wanting to play. He is estimated to be about one year old and still plays and behaves like a puppy. He listens well, has good eye contact and will be easily trained. He walks great on a leash and is potty trained. As you can tell in some of his pictures, he loves to snuggle!!
So - KOLA is looking for that special family that has the time to give him his eye drops 2-3 times a day, or as when indicated by the vet. Be able to monitor his eye and take him for check ups and assessments as and when needed. The cost of the eye drops is around $150 (give or take) and last for around 6 weeks.
Despite the issue with his eye, KOLA is happy, healthy and ready for his new family. He would benefit from an active family that likes to go on road trips and take him to new places where he can explore the sights, smells and sounds the world has to offer. KOLA will need training and we recommend that the family has the time and patience to work with him on basic and advanced obedience. Working together as a family to train him, will not only help with forming a bond, but will allow both KOLA and humans to learn each others body language, personalites, boundaries and expectations.
KOLA is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $500. This cost is non-negotiable and is used to cover the cost of vetting, health certificates and the expense of looking after all of our rescue dogs.
If you have the time, patience and heart to want to give this handsome boy a home, please follow the link below to the Adoption Application and complete then submit. It generally takes 2-3 days to process applications as long as we have been able to contact your references and veterinarian.

KOLA is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located inbetween two small towns, Dover-Foxcroft and Milo, both approximately 6 miles away and the closest major city is Bangor (approx 45 miles). Many families travel and make a mini-vacation out of the trip and stay in beautiful Maine for the weekend, however, if this is not possible and there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen.
