CANNON was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. CANNON is neutered, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 23 September 2017 and weighs around 22.60 pounds. He has been listed as a Australian Cattle Dog. We have no way of knowing the exact breed, so it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely.
CANNON is a handsome, fun, loving, affectionate, firework. He is a young boy who has not had much socialization with other dogs and no training in any way. I brought him over to the shop to stay with some of my own dogs and more long term rescue dogs, also mums and the 3 month old pups are there, so he has a very good spectrum of dog ages, sizes and personalities. I did this so that he can learn how to behave with other dogs as he was just jumping all over them. In a few days he has learnt so much and although he still does jump all over me, he is getting much more respectful with the other dogs and more gentle with the pups - who have no problem letting him know he is playing too rough.
CANNON is a working breed dog and so needs a family that understands the work that these dogs need. He is very high energy and very intelligent and so he will need lots of physical exercise in line with his age, as he is young and still growing it is important to let him play and rest when he is tired. Mental stimulation is extremely important with working breed dogs and he will need lots of training and then fun stimulation, games, tricks and such. He would be a great dog to train in agility and fun things like that.
He did meet a family and their two young children and other than jumping up he was great, he has just not had any direction and so is learning how to behave and act and he is very responsive.
He can be a bit grumpy if he is at the food bowl and other dogs come up, but telling him no, stops him and by staying with him he will let the other dogs and pups eat with him. This is from him most likely being a stray and having to fend for himself, but with consistency and guidance he will soon learn that there is no need to try and keep the food for himself as there is always more to come.
CANNON does use the dog door to go out to do his business or enjoy the fresh air in his run. I do not know if he would let you know he needs to go out since he has 24/7 access to the outside, but he is extremely smart and do not think it would take long to learn.
He needs an active family, I have only seen him for a few minutes with children, but his demeanor and personality I have no doubt that he would be great with them and a lot of fun too. As with all puppies and rescue's he needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with him themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other.
We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks.
CANNON is available for adoption for an adoption fee of $550. Canadian adopters need to know that customs charge 15% taxes when entering into Canada. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.
