KATE was saved in March 2018 with her 8 x 4 week old puppies from a high kill shelter in Texas. Kate is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 15 September 2015 and weighs around 70.00 pounds. Kate has been listed as a German Shepherd Dog Mix, however, we are not able to say for sure what breed she is, it is up to you to look at her pictures and decide what you think she looks like. 

Kate was a great mum with her pups, who were all adopted around May 2018 and she then started to enjoy herself and catch up on the fun she missed whilst being a mum. KATE was adopted in November 2018 and renamed Honey.

Her family said that she was a fantastic dog, she is very responsive to commands, as long as she has "treats". She can get a little uncomfortable when things get noisy and active in the house and she will go and lie in her quiet space out of the hustle and bustle. She was a great family pet and although great with kids, would be better in a home with older children where things don't get as crazy and noisy. 

KATE did begin to develop protectiveness, territorial ism of her home and family and this is where the problem is. This is common when dogs basically take the "alpha role" and this behaviour needs to be stopped immediately or it does develop into the dog thinking that they can "dictate" who comes in the house, who moves around and such.

KATE is a German Shepherd and as is intelligent and naturally protective, she need to know 100% that humans are in charge and any negative behaviour needs a negative consequence. If she growls at anyone, that is her thinking that she is in control of who can come in the home and this needs to be stopped immediately. She needs to be told "No" and removed from that room so that she knows that kind of behaviour will not be tolerated. If this behaviour is not controlled it will escalate and problems will happen. Kate needs a strong personality, a family that she understands that these dogs will challenge and push people, just like children, they need to be asked / told to do something and follow through - these dogs can be the master manipulator if they think that they don't have to do what they are told.

Kate came back to the rescue on 3rd April and is living in the house with 20 dogs of all ages and sizes. She has fit in great and although when the dogs all start playing she will lie down in another room or out of the way.

In March 2019 I received an email from the family stating that they would need to return KATE because she has a few issues that have developed that they could no longer work with since they had children. She is missing her home with the attention and clearly misses going on walks. She will lie as close as she can to my chair and in true GSD fashion will follow me around wherever I go. She has never shown any aggression or negative behaviour whilst being here at the rescue, but dogs act differently to different environments and a family/home setting is different to being here. It is important that since she has a family that understands she needs strong leadership and she can be spoiled and fussed on, but must have boundaries and that negative consequence to a negative behaviour.  She walks great on a leash,although her family said that she can be aggressive when leashed and see;s other dogs, this could be down to her feeling she needed to protect her family, but caution and training would need to be taken in this regards. She loves to go on car rides and is generally a very sweet, all round great girl.

RESCUE INFORMATION PRIOR TO ADOPTION IN NOVEMBER 2018
Kate arrived at the rescue and understandably was protective of her puppies. She would want to get to know someone first and when she was happy they was ok and of course gave her lots of love and attention then she is content with people going to see her puppies. She is living in the communal area that can be sectioned off and after a few days, I let the gates open so she could get out and about with the other dogs and she would decide which dogs were ok to go and check out her pups. She has done great and over the first few weeks is happy and trusting of everyone, but all dogs know to respect her space and the pups. 

Kate is a very loving, sweet, affectionate girl who will make a wonderful addition to any active, suitable family. She is a gentle soul, but now the pups are getting so much more independent she is starting to enjoy the freedom of being with the other dogs outside and starting to play and relax more. Kate does use the dog door to go out to do her business or enjoy the fresh air in her run. I do not know if she would let you know she needs to go out since she has 24/7 access to the outside, but she is extremely smart and do not think it would take long to learn. 

Kate is great with other dogs and is happy to run around chasing and wrestling. She has not shown any sign of aggression at all.  She has a lot of energy and so she will need an active family. Someone who understands the importance of mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. I have not seen her with children, but her demeanor and personality I have no doubt that she would be great with them and a lot of fun too. She needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with her themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other. Kate rides good in the car. She is used to being with other dogs so a family with another dog would be great, however, if that is not the case, then play-dates with other dogs would be extremely beneficial for her. We do not have cats or livestock at the rescue so cannot comment on how she would be near or around them. 

We do not have cats at the rescue so we cannot say how she would be around them, however, I am not sure I would trust her with them since she has a high working drive. She is great with humans and I believe would be great with children, I am sure they could keep each other entertained for many hours. ​

We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks. 

KATE is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $550. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.

​ KATE  is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations  and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen.
