RUSTY was transferred from a rescue in West Texas to GaDaH. RUSTY is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, lepto, heartworm and tick disease tested negative, is on monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention, microchipped and at the time of transfer in May 2020 weighed around 38 pounds. He has an estimated date of birth of 9 May 2017.  We have no way of knowing the exact breed, it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely.

RUSTY started off living in the communual area with dogs of all ages and sizes, however, there was an instant where he got into a tussle with another dog, no injury and both dogs stopped immediately when I yelled at them, however, due to this Rusty is living in the kennel so that no incidents can happen. For this reason also, we are recommending that he be the only dog - it might just be individual dogs that he doesnt' get on with, however, when we have no history on them it is best to air on the side of caution and we hope families will do the same. It could just be that the dogs are "figuring things out" having only been here a short while, and I think under supervised conditions he could be with other dogs but I would only encourage supervised play.

He can be shy when he first meets people, but soon warms up and will snuggle and lean into your body to get lots of love and cuddles. Rusty was an owner surrender in March 2019 to the Texas rescue as he kept climbing over the families 6 foot fence. Since being here, although we have an 8ft fence, he has shown no indications of looking or wanting to climb over. However, this needs to be taken into account if he is not kept busy and content, he may want to and is capable of climbing a fence.

RUSTY did have access to a large enclosed in area, a video of which is on his page on the website, however, now he is in a double kennel with large enclosed area of his own, which is accessed through a dog door. We are not able to say if he is house-trained other than that, so we expect families to be prepared to work on housetraining whilst he transitions to his new home, life and family.

RUSTY is only a young adult who is bursting with energy and so we are looking for an active family that will take him on walks, road trips and adventures so he can enjoy what the world has to offer. As with all new dogs Rusty does need to be trained and it is beneficial for both him and his new family to do basic training at home, so personalities, body language and mannerisms can be learnt from each other, boundaries and rules set for him.  Training classes are encouraged for socialization also. Since being at the rescue Rusty has not been exposed to cats or livestock so we are unable to say how he would be around them.

All dogs are fed  Rachael Ray Nutrish PEAK Natural Dry Dog Food, Grain Free Western Grasslands Recipe with Bison. Rachael Ray Nutrish Peak Dog Food receives the Dog Food Advisor’s second-highest tier rating of 4.5 stars.

Rusty is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue, located in Sebec, Maine for an adoption fee of $550. Families MUST travel to the rescue in Sebec, Maine for meet and greet at time of adoption

Our process takes around 2-4 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements.

Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks.

Canadian adopters need to know that customs charge 15% taxes when entering into Canada. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.

ALL Dogs are LOCATED AT THE RESCUE IN SEBEC, MAINE.  We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations  and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend.
