Handsome boy SPIKE has been stuck here at the rescue for over 4 months now - for reasons..... well most likely because he is a pit bull.
SPIKE is fully vetted, and is around 2 1/2 years old. He is a strong, handsome, extremely affectionate boy who is bursting with love and energy.
Spike has lived with a range of dogs from pups who jumped all over him, to 120 pound shepherds and all sizes and breeds in between. He has never had a problem with any dog, male or female. He LOVES to play and wrestle and is always snuggling at night with either one or several of the dogs he shares a communal kennel with.
He does jump up, which is to be expected for a rescue dog in a kennels as they are craving attention and also competing with the other dogs, but he is extremely responsive. He pulls on the leash, but again, it is mainly due to excitement and not getting out on a leash often. He likes to hug and give the biggest, best kisses. He rides great in the car and when he was at the vets for his neuter surgery, all the staff fell in love with his goofy personality.
We are looking for an active family who is familiar with the pit-bull breed and who is dedicated to giving this wonderful boy his forever home.
SPIKE is deserving of a perfect family that will love him and give him all the he needs, lots of adventures, road trips, socialization to different people, places, animals and eventually play dates with other dogs, but most importantly a family committed to training him , keeping him happy, healthy and active.
All dogs use dog doors to go out and do their business or to enjoy the cool, fresh weather in their dog runs or communal areas. We cannot say if a dog is house-trained, however, we expect families to understand that all dogs need a transition period and accidents could happen and training is most definitely needed.
You MUST understand that dogs need time to decompress and adapt to their new environment and home. It is a HUGE transition they make from the kill shelter, being vetted, on transport for 3 days and arriving in Maine where the temperature and such is very different to what they have only known. In rescue there is what is known as the "3 Point Rule" Days 1-3 your dog is stressed, anxious, confused as to where they are now. Weeks 1-3 your dog is adjusting, settling in, learning things. At the 3 month point, your dog understands they are home, and have built up a trusting relationship where they feel loved and secure.
The rescue buys food in bulk, by the truck load and there are a variety of brands and flavours. None of the food given is less than a 4* food rating in accordance with the dogfoodadvisor.com. There has not had been issues with eating any of the varying food. It is important that you do your research on the ingredients and speak to your vet or a nutritionist on grain vs grain free!
ALL dogs are available for adoption for an adoption fee of US $550
