All of our available animals are located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. Once approved, families are invited to schedule an appointment to come to the rescue to meet and hopefully take home their new forever best friend.
LARRY is neutered, has rabies, core vaccines, heartworm/tick disease tested.. He is de-wormed, monthly preventatives and microchipped. He weighs around 95 pounds and has an estimated date of birth of 24 February 2017. Larry came to the rescue from a back-yard breeder because he had a deformed penis and felt they couldn't sell him. His deformity is to do with the shaft not covering the penis and causes no problems at all.
Larry is a big handsome boy who is like everyone's favourite uncle, he will roll around with other dogs and pups and let them pull on his ears and tail and climb all over him. He is also like a quarter back when is out running, he always has to have something to carry and he charges around letting everyone see how big, strong and handsome he is. Larry does need touching up on his training and like all intelligent dogs he can have selective hearing, but will respond. He rides great in the car, generally walks ok on the leash, maybe pulling a little, but again very responsive. Larry is great with cats and has had little interest in them, other than to maybe lick them, but as with all introductions caution should be taken since animals, like humans have individual personalities and don't have to like every animal they meet. Larry can be vocal in true German Shepherd form, but he doesn't bark for no reason, he likes to talk and wail.
Larry is housetrained, however, he has 24/7 access to outside through dog doors so will not know to let you know he wants to go outside, so watching him at first whilst he settles into his new routine would be best. Larry hasn't been destructive and he loves to hang out on the sofa or take over the bed.
We are looking for an active family who is familiar with the German Shepherd Dog breed and who is dedicated to giving this wonderful boy his forever home.
Larry is deserving of a perfect family that will love him and give him all the he needs, lots of adventures, road trips, socialization to different people, places, animals and eventually play dates with other dogs, but most importantly a family committed to training him, keeping him happy, healthy and active.
You MUST understand that dogs need time to decompress and adapt to their new environment and home. It is a HUGE transition they make from the kill shelter, being vetted, on transport for 3 days and arriving in Maine where the temperature and such is very different to what they have only known. In rescue there is what is known as the "3 Point Rule" Days 1-3 your dog is stressed, anxious, confused as to where they are now. Weeks 1-3 your dog is adjusting, settling in, learning things. At the 3 month point, your dog understands they are home, and have built up a trusting relationship where they feel loved and secure.
The rescue buys food in bulk, by the truck load and there are a variety of brands and flavours. None of the food given is less than a 4* food rating in accordance with the dogfoodadvisor.com. There has not had been issues with eating any of the varying food. It is important that you do your research on the ingredients and speak to your vet or a nutritionist on grain vs grain free!
ALL dogs are available for adoption for an adoption fee of US $550
This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas, or other locations, countries to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food, general day to day cost of running a brick and mortar rescue and anything else that is needed.
Canadian families, must confirm with the border that they are able to cross and have the required vaccines, documentation and anything else needed to enter the US. Also it is important to know that Canadian Customs charge 15% taxes on the adoption when you return into Canada.
If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious soul a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the ADOPTION INFO tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 1-2 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then we can schedule your appointment to come to the rescue in Sebec, Maine for meet/greet/adopt
Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks.
