TEXAS was saved from San Antonio Animal Care Services on 6th March 2015.
I took TEXAS to Somerset Animal Clinic as he appeared to have an infection and I had a full blood panel run (this came back confirming infection, but everything else was great). On his examination Dr.
Green heard a heart murmour and I approved chest x-rays (X-rays will be sent when adopted with his medical record) and Dr.Green found his heart to be slightly enlarged, not as bad as she has suspected and on a scale of 5 he is at the 2-3 point for his murmour. On his medical record she wrote:
Heart has a little enlargement of right atrium and left ventrical. Lungs are normal for his age. The leakage is not causing any cardiac shape changes. At this point murmur is not causing any problems. Just a sound.
The good news is that this could actually improve when his infection has cleared up totally and he has gained some weight and is in the general condition that he should be. Just to be safe though, his perfect forever family will need to have at least yearly, if not 6 mth x-rays so that they can keep on top of this, which since he is 5 years old and almost a senior this is highly recommended anyway. TEXAS does not show any signs of being affected by this, he is not a high energy dog and at his age is happy to go on nice long walks and hang out with his perfect family.
TEXAS is good with the other dogs although he is not wanting to go running around with them he is social but is happy to chill out. TEXAS still has energy and although he has been aged around 5 years old, he will still need a family that can take him on walks and give him the important and necessary mental and physical exercise that German Shepherd Dogs need to live a truly happy, fulfilling life.
TEXAS is a gentle boy, who like all dogs will benefit from basic and advanced obedience training with his new family. This not only creates a stronger bond, but also sets boundaries and expectations. It also allows both humans and dogs to learn each others body language and personalities.
He is very mild mannered and has a beautiful temperament and would make a fantastic companion for anyone wanting a German Shepherd Dog, but doesn't want to deal with that high energy they have when they are younger.
TEXAS does have a long coat and so will require a high level of grooming and upkeep, daily brushing is an absolute minimum.
TEXAS is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm tested negative and micro-chipped. He has been given a date of birth or around 2nd March 2010 and at the time of rescue he weighed 73.20 pounds, although at the vets office he weighed 56.00 pounds, so I think the shelter made a mistake with his weight. He should however, weight at least 70-80 pounds and we are working on that and within the first two weeks he had already gained 3.3 pounds.
TEXAS is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $350.
