RIVER was saved from San Antonio HIGH KILL shelter in Texas by another rescue, however, due to some unforeseen circumstances, she ended up coming up to Sebec, Maine to join the GaDaH rescue pack.
RIVER is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, lepto vaccine, heartworm tested negative, de-wormed and micro-chipped. At the time of rescue she weighed around 59 pounds and clearly ha some weight to gain. She is estimated to be around 3 years old.
RIVER when she first met me was a little wary, but soon became friendly and over the past few weeks has gained a lot of trust. She is great with other dogs and is currently living in a large kennel with 3 other female German Shepherd Dogs. RIVER is great with small dogs also and plays with a small 10 pound terrier, although I only allow supervised play when all together.
RIVER is getting to be very affectionate, she takes treats gently and is generally well mannered. She does jump up at times, but I think that is more of her following the other dogs doing that for attention. This would be something that can easily be corrected.
RIVER will benefit from an active family that has time to spend with her and give her the much needed basic and advanced obedience that all new dogs need. With all family members involved in the training, everyone will understand personalities, expectations and boundaries, which benefits everyone and will give a strong bonding with understanding.
We do not have cats at the rescue so I am unable to say how she is around cats. I think she would be curious and want to play, but with letting her curiosity and supervision I feel she would be quickly bored with the cat.
RIVER would benefit from a family that is active and can take her camping, hiking, long walks, runs and anything and everything possible that they can do. I do not know RIVER's history but something has made her wary of people and of course starved her or neglected her so she became so thin - she deserves a family full of love, affection and equal devotion that she would give them.
RIVER is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for $300.
If you feel you have what it takes in your heart and home to give this beautiful girl the life she deserves, please go to the APPLICATION tab on our website and complete, then submit the application form. The process takes between 3-7 days and once approved and the adoption contract and fee has been submitted we can discuss if you are able to travel to Sebec, Maine to meet her and then take her home, or if we need to work out transport, which could incur additional costs to the adopter.
