​ CHA-CHA-1  was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas where dogs have just 3 dogs to be saved. CHA-CHA-1 is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, monthly preventatives, heartworm and tick disease tested negative and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 4 April 2017  and at the time of rescue in the middle of April 2019,  weighed around 48.00 pounds. She is listed as an German Shepherd Dog . We have no way of knowing the exact breed, it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely.

We do not know how she is around cats or livestock at the rescue so are unable to comment how any dog is or will be around them.

When Cha-Cha arrived at the rescue I immediately noticed that she was walking with a wobble. I got her scheduled for x-rays as I had suspected hip dysplasia. The x-rays showed she didn't have the greatest of hips, but it wasn't dysplasia and it was not the cause of the wobble. Her spine is also good, so wobbler syndrome was ruled out. At this time this poor girl was so low and depressed, she would just sit hanging her head down, totally broken. X-rays can be viewed on the rescue website on her page among the other pictures of her.

She was prescribed one week of pain/anti-inflammatory medications, then two days of nothing to clear her system and then 2 weeks of prednisone with the second part being the weening off period. This was to see if she was better or worse on any of them since it is unclear and the vet doesn't know what is causing her wobble.

She completed both medications and has not been on anything for the past week and as you can see in the video below she is doing great - she has definitely gained weight and I believe with living in the house with all the other dogs and having access to a good sized area, she has started to build up her muscles which were very undeveloped when we had saved her.

Her personality is just shining and each day she gets happier, she has started to try and jump up on me, which shows she is gaining strength in her rear legs and I"m hoping that means also she is not feeling any pain. With the hustle and bustle of lots of dogs she is getting up and down a lot which is also helping to build up her strength but she has plenty of places to go and rest out of the way if she wants to.

She is a very loving girl and definitely has signs of being abused, if she thinks she is in trouble she instantly drops to the floor cowering and crawls away as if expecting to be hit - so heartbreaking.

I would imagine that over time Cha-Cha will continue to gain strength in her rear leg muscles and get stronger and better, I think she would always have the wobble and so is not a girl to be taking on long walks, or hikes, swimming would be fantastic for her and short leisurely walks, allowing her to run and play if she wants to, but at her pace where she isn't pushed.

She gets on great with other dogs, but can get irritated with the smaller dogs jumping up on her (can't blame her for that lol) so if she is going to be living with little dogs, supervision will be needed. She does try and "claim" me with the other dogs, but I, nor the other dogs put up with that, but if allowed to do so, I can see her wanting to become alpha of the household so it is important that this not be allowed to happen and she knows who is in charge, no matter how majestically gorgeous and manipulating she is.

So, on this rare instance we are not looking for a super active family for a young GSD, but she does definitely still need a decent amount of exercise to keep her legs strong.

Canadian adopters need to know that customs charge 15% taxes when entering into Canada. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.

ALL Dogs are LOCATED AT THE RESCUE IN SEBEC, MAINE.  We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations  and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend.
