Louise was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas with her sister, Thelma back in early 2015. Both girls were adopted, Louise going to her new family in November 2015. The rescue had a phone call on 29th July 2018 from her family stating she needed to be returned and on 30th July 2018 Louise was brought back to the rescue.

Louise is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed and micro-chipped.  She has an estimated date of birth of 27 March 2013 and weighs around 20-25 pounds. Louise has been listed as a Scottie / Yorkie mix, however, we are not able to say for sure what breed she is, it is up to you to look at her pictures and decide what you think she looks like.

Louise was returned to the rescue after 2.5 years as she was not socialized with other people and would growl at them. That is all the family would say really. It doesn't sound like she was taken anywhere or anything to help her learn to interact with people. When she was at the rescue she was fine with friends or volunteers that came round, although she was a little shy. Her family said she walks on a leash and is house trained. It was clear Louise did love her mum and her mum was upset at leaving her but did the right thing returning her since they didn't have the time for her.

I spent some time alone with Louise for a little while and she was upset and confused wondering what was going on. I then brought her up into the house, having put most of the dogs, except a few of the smaller dogs in the dog room with access to outside, so that she could get used to the house again, let her smell all the new smells and get settled. She soon relaxed and turned on her happy smile, was following me around and wagging her tail. She started to play with a few of the smaller dogs and has adapted very quickly. When I let the other dogs in, I put her in a crate so as to not overwhelm her having all the dogs wanting to sniff at her, then let her out and she jumped up in the chair and is sat snuggled up to me as I type this bio.

Louise is going to need a family that is prepared to work with her and introduce her to people, to take her places and let her explore the world and learn that not all people are bad, or to be scared of. Having another dog would be a huge help and we will be looking for a family who has another dog, or be willing to adopt another dog with her. This will help her settle and another dog who is confident with people will help her learn and see there is nothing to be worried about.

She needs a relatively active family so she can get out. I have not seen her with children, however, as per the reason she was returned, she will most likely be wary of them and not want to be fussed. So, I would recommend older children, or children that do not want to fuss over a dog.

Even though the family said she has had some training it is important that her new family go over basic training with her themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other.

We do  not have cats or livestock at the rescue so are unable to comment on how she would be with or near them. She is good with other dogs of all sizes and ages.

​We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks.

LOUISE is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $550.

This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.

LOUISE is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine.  We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations  and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen.
